“The mind is not a vessel that needs filling,
but wood that needs igniting.”
-Plutarch
In November 2019, several NIDA students from the Stage and Screen Performance and Musical Theatre courses were invited to participate in the research study for my Master’s thesis. I was testing the use of M.E.T. techniques in the specific domain of reducing performance anxiety.
Here are some excerpts taken from the exit interviews, immediately after their use of the tapping techniques and final Shakespearean auditions.
This footage was only intended as private data to accompany my research. It is with great respect and gratitude that I thank these participants for their permission to share their experiences with you today.
Sarah is a consummate professional who approaches her work with great dedication while also maintaining a sense of warmth, comfort, and generosity to her coaching. As a music director and vocal coach, her insights into performance-targeted practices such as tapping exercises, tala work, and mind-body awareness were extremely helpful.
Her myriad of experiences as both a performer and coach underpin her theoretical work and provide a constant awareness of real-life application for all of her techniques. As someone actively working in a creative role in theatre, her work aligned my focus on practical aids that can be offered with kindness and care to performers of all levels.
Sarah Chalmers brought decades of vocal expertise to the rehearsal room during our production of Brecht’s A Respectable Wedding. As many of the actors in the production were current acting students or recent graduates, Sarah was able to bring a great deal of assistance to the performers in managing their performance anxiety. These are techniques the actors will undoubtedly carry with them into their careers.
I learned many new vocal warm up techniques from Sarah where she took a unique embodied, engaging and fun approach – a polished skillset she has gained from years in the business.
Sarah’s wealth of knowledge combined with her healthy sense of play make for an experience invaluable for any individual or organization.
I’ve both observed and participated in Sarah’s workshops and can say that she teaches with passion and joy in equal measure. She makes highly structured work feel like a shared exploration and even like play, allowing her unique expertise to be easily accessible to all. I’m proud to recommend Sarah to anyone needing help with anxiety or to hone their vocal performance and presentation skills.
I trained for several years prior to working with Sarah and I constantly struggled with performance anxiety and vocal control. Through Sarah’s patience, enthusiasm, innovative teaching style and tapping methods, I was able to gain control of my voice and my anxiety and pursue my career with confidence.
Sarah is engaging and authentic and her genius and expertise not only speak for themselves, but also through her passionate, successful and highly skilled alumni, and each day I am thankful for the skills that I gained while I was working with Sarah.
My sessions with Sarah included a number of elements that are not to be found anywhere else. As well as the acting consultations, where she helped my performance grow to a point that I gained entry into a highly regarded tertiary institution, we also worked on confidence, self-preparation and presentation, manifestation, visualization, and interview techniques.
I personally found the therapeutic techniques that Sarah introduced, such as E.F.T and bush flower remedies, gave me an extra edge in managing my health, performance nerves, and energy levels. This gave me, not only the performance skills for my audition, but helped to complete me as a whole package, and cover all bases. I definitely now feel prepared on a multi-dimensional level!”
After my sessions with Sarah I walked away with not only an achieved goal but also somebody I would consider a mentor. Consultations with Sarah are something I will be harnessing throughout my whole career.
Sarah absolutely influenced my approach to voice. She is not only an incredibly knowledgeable tutor when it comes to meridian energy techniques, but is also a passionate and kind tutor who really cares about the well-being of her students.
I’ve used her techniques to reduce performance anxiety using EFT and the gamut point, easily tapping into my true potential as a performer and a voice artist and I can’t thank her enough for the kindness and support she offered while I was studying at NIDA. So, thanks so much Sarah!
